Google tests Flipkart checkout inside Gemini and AI Mode in India ahead of festive sales

Google is testing a feature in India that lets some users buy selected Flipkart products without leaving its AI tools, according to a TechCrunch report published this weekend. The Google Gemini Flipkart shopping trial adds a “Buy” button to certain listings in Gemini and Google Search’s AI Mode.

How the test works

Tapping the button opens a Flipkart-branded checkout flow while the user stays within Google’s AI shopping experience. The trial appears limited to a small group of users and a narrow range of products such as smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories. Other users may still see Flipkart items only as regular listings. Google said it routinely tests features that help people connect with businesses but gave no details; Flipkart had not commented at the time of the report.

Part of a bigger ‘agentic commerce’ push

The experiment fits Google’s effort to turn AI assistants into places where transactions happen, not just recommendations. Google has introduced a Universal Commerce Protocol to link retailers’ inventory, checkout and post-purchase services with AI agents, and has named Flipkart as an Asia-Pacific partner. The exact rollout timeline and technology behind this test remain unconfirmed.

Why it matters

India’s festive sale season is the most important shopping period of the year for Flipkart and Amazon. If AI assistants can take a shopper from question to payment in one place, Google gains a stronger position between search and the retailer, and competition with OpenAI and others for the online shopping journey will intensify. For consumers, it may mean faster purchases but also raises questions about how products are ranked. Google has been expanding Gemini in India, including a free AI Plus plan for college students.
