Shubman Gill smashed the fastest ODI double century to seal India’s record chase of 406 against West Indies, turning a daunting target into a statement win on a high-scoring night. The opener’s innings blended classical drives with relentless strike rotation, rewriting the chase script and rewriting personal milestones in the same evening.
Anatomy of a record chase
Chasing 406 asked for a flying start and unbroken intensity across fifty overs. Gill answered both, keeping the required rate in check while partners rotated the strike at the other end. West Indies’ bowlers struggled to find a length as boundaries flowed through cover and midwicket, and the asking rate never ballooned out of reach once the powerplay had set the tone.
The double ton underlines Gill’s rise as India’s white-ball anchor in big chases. Selectors and fans will see the innings as proof that the ODI middle game can still be dominated by a batter who refuses to trade tempo for safety when the scoreboard pressure is heaviest.
What it means for the series
India take a clear psychological edge into the remaining ODIs. West Indies must rethink new-ball plans and death bowling after leaking a historic chase on Indian soil, especially if Gill continues to bat through the middle overs. Reporting: ESPNcricinfo.
Place in the record books
Fastest ODI double century and a 400-plus chase will sit together in the scorebook — a night that strengthens Gill’s claim as the face of India’s next ODI cycle and gives the dressing room belief for any future mountain chase. Commentators called the innings a masterclass in pacing a long chase, especially the phase between overs 30 and 40 when West Indies tried to dry the boundaries and force a mistake.
