Hurricane Trudy is a Category 2 storm off Mexico’s Pacific coast, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph (155 km/h), the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. At 6 pm Central time on 17 October (5.30 am IST on 18 October), the centre was about 160 km south-west of Manzanillo and 280 km south of Cabo Corrientes, at latitude 17.9 North and longitude 105.3 West. Trudy was moving north-west at about 17 km/h, with a minimum central pressure of 976 millibars.

Hurricane Trudy warnings from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes
A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the coast of Mexico from Manzanillo northward to Cabo Corrientes, meaning hurricane conditions are expected there; the NHC said they should arrive by later on Saturday night. A Hurricane Watch covers the coast from south of Manzanillo to Punta San Telmo. Tropical Storm Warnings are in place from south of Manzanillo to Lazaro Cardenas, from north of Cabo Corrientes to San Blas, and for Las Islas Marias. Hurricane-force winds extend up to 55 km from the centre, and tropical-storm-force winds up to 220 km. Hurricane conditions are possible in the watch area on Saturday night. Interests elsewhere in south-western and west-central Mexico should keep monitoring Trudy’s progress, the NHC said, and people should follow advice from Mexico’s national meteorological service.
Key Facts
- Winds: 100 mph (155 km/h), Category 2
- Position: 17.9N, 105.3W, 160 km SW of Manzanillo
- Pressure: 976 mb; moving NW at 17 km/h
- Hurricane Warning: Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes
- Rain: 4-8 in, isolated 12 in, in Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco
Rain, storm surge and surf for Colima, Jalisco and Michoacan
The NHC expects Trudy to bring 4 to 8 inches (about 100 to 200 mm) of rain along and near the coast in Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco, with isolated totals of around 12 inches (300 mm). That could cause life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially on steep terrain. Outer bands could drop 2 to 4 inches in Guerrero and Nayarit. A dangerous storm surge with damaging waves is likely where winds blow onshore in the warning areas, and swells will cause life-threatening surf and rip currents as they spread north toward west-central Mexico.
What happens next with Hurricane Trudy
On the forecast track, the centre will pass near the coast of south-western and west-central Mexico on Saturday night and Sunday, the NHC said, before turning toward the west-north-west on Sunday night. Some more strengthening is possible on Saturday night, with weakening expected to begin late on Sunday. AP also reported that Trudy had strengthened to Category 2 as it approached Mexico. A Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale has winds of 96 to 110 mph, enough to damage roofs and trees and cut power. The NHC’s next full advisory was due at 9 pm Central time on Saturday.
