International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2026: UN says 2.8 billion people lack adequate housing

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was marked on 17 October 2026 with a focus on “Safe Homes for All”, as the United Nations said more than 2.8 billion people worldwide face some form of inadequate housing. The day falls under the UN’s 2026 to 2028 theme, “United for Peace and Human Rights”, and the official UN commemoration was held a day early, on Friday, 16 October. People already living in poverty and exclusion bear the greatest burden, the UN said.

Why the Eradication of Poverty day is about homes this year

The UN says housing insecurity is not simply a question of shelter. Unsafe, unaffordable, overcrowded or insecure housing can deepen poverty and exclusion and undermine other human rights. Without a safe and stable home, it becomes far harder to get health care, education and work, or to take part in community life. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in his message for the day, called on countries to “mobilize the political will and investments needed to ensure everyone has a safe home, and the opportunity to build a life of dignity, free from poverty”.

Key Facts

  • Observed: 17 Oct 2026; UN event on 16 Oct
  • 2026 focus: Safe Homes for All
  • Inadequate housing: 2.8 billion+ people
  • Theme 2026-2028: United for Peace and Human Rights
  • Builds on: Doha Political Declaration (A/RES/80/5)

Three calls to action on adequate housing

The UN’s 2026 concept note sets out three asks. First, governments should make safe housing a human rights priority and give a dignified standard of living proper weight in public policy and budgets. Second, they should design housing policies with people experiencing poverty, involving them directly in planning, delivery and review rather than through token consultation. Third, they should strengthen public financing and other resources to expand access to safe, accessible and affordable homes so that no one is left behind. The UN links this work to Sustainable Development Goals 1, 10, 11 and 16. These steps, the UN says, should treat people living in poverty as holders of rights and knowledge, not just recipients of aid.

The Doha Political Declaration and what comes next

The 2026 focus builds on the Doha Political Declaration, resolution A/RES/80/5, which the UN General Assembly adopted after the Second World Summit for Social Development in November 2025. The declaration reaffirms the right to an adequate standard of living, including safe and affordable housing, safe drinking water and sanitation, and calls for action on poverty in all its forms. The day has been observed every year on 17 October, and the UN says ending poverty cannot be separated from protecting human rights, dignity and peace. For many families, the UN notes, that starts with a secure roof overhead. Ensuring safe and adequate housing, the UN adds, supports progress across several Sustainable Development Goals at once.

Why It Matters: Housing costs and unsafe homes push families deeper into poverty, and the UN wants governments to treat a safe home as a basic right rather than a luxury.
