Syria Security Council briefing: UN and Damascus discuss elections, OPCW progress

The Syria Security Council briefing on Monday heard that the UN and Damascus have begun discussing preparations for future elections, including possible UN electoral help, UN News reported. The country’s transition faces pressure on several fronts.

Key points from the Syria Security Council briefing

About 5.5 million Syrians remain displaced, around 800,000 of them in camps. Economic hardship is fuelling unrest, and sectarian tensions persist in Sweida. Israeli forces have held expanded territory in southern Syria since December 2024.

Key Facts

  • Displaced Syrians: 5.5 million
  • In camps: about 800,000
  • Chemical bombs destroyed (verified): 42
  • IAEA probe closed: 9 September

OPCW chemical weapons progress

The OPCW has for the first time verified the destruction of Syrian chemical munitions: 42 aerial bombs. UN meetings coverage said this was the first such verified destruction since 2014, while 19 issues from Syria’s original declaration remain unresolved.

Nuclear file closed

The IAEA nuclear watchdog ended its investigation into Syria’s nuclear non-compliance on 9 September, the UN said. Security Council Report had flagged elections and the economy as key issues for this month’s meeting.

Why It Matters: Elections and an end to the chemical weapons file would be big steps toward Syria's return to normal ties, but displacement and border clashes still threaten that path.
