Colombia peace deal under strain as armed groups nearly double, UN tells Security Council

The Colombia peace deal must be carried out in full despite rising insecurity, UN envoy Miroslav Jenča told the Security Council on Monday, UN News reported. Nearly 10 years after the 2016 accord, he said implementation had many shortcomings.

Why the Colombia peace deal is under pressure

Government data show illegal armed groups grew from about 15,000 members in 2022 to about 28,000 today. Child recruitment and attacks on women remain major concerns. Jenča condemned the killings of civil society leaders María Ovidia Palechor and James Flor in Cauca on 1 September.

Key Facts

  • Armed group members: 15,000 (2022) to 28,000 now
  • Ex-combatants in reintegration: 11,000+
  • Ex-combatants killed since 2016: 501
  • Productive projects: about 6,000

“We look forward to the further definition of its policies, and we stand ready to support the Government in this regard.”

— Miroslav Jenča, UN Special Representative for Colombia

FARC-EP reintegration: 11,000 still committed

More than 11,000 former FARC-EP members remain in the reintegration process. They have built about 6,000 productive projects and 300 cooperatives. But 501 former combatants have been killed since 2016, most recently on 22 September in Cesar, DPPA’s published remarks said.

Miroslav Jenca: a new political chapter

Jenča said security policy and the peace deal should reinforce each other. He said Colombia had entered a new political chapter with wide-ranging challenges, and called for sustained international engagement.

Why It Matters: Growing armed groups threaten the gains of Latin America's most watched peace process and the lives of those who laid down arms.
