Bharat Rice launched for Army troops as FCI pact strengthens military supply chain

Bharat Rice was launched for the defence forces in New Delhi on 12 October, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Food Minister Pralhad Joshi present. The Army also signed an MoU with the Food Corporation of India to use its infrastructure during operational contingencies, the defence ministry said.

How Bharat Rice reaches Army supply depots

The rice will be delivered directly to Army Supply Depots, including those in far-flung parts of Ladakh and the North East. Until now, depots collected rice from local FCI facilities. Singh said the rice will meet standard specifications and come in ergonomic packaging, which helps troops carrying rations over difficult terrain.

Key Facts

  • Launched: 12 October 2026, New Delhi
  • Delivery: straight to Army Supply Depots, incl. Ladakh and the North East
  • MoU: Army can use FCI storage in contingencies
  • Packaging: ergonomic, for remote terrain

“Therefore, we must build logistics resilience to sustain our operations. This MoU with FCI represents a significant step in that direction.”

— Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister

What the Indian Army FCI MoU covers

Under the MoU, the Army can use FCI warehouses, silos, material-handling equipment and trained staff across the country, including in operationally important areas. The Hindu BusinessLine and DD News also reported the launch and the logistics pact. Singh called the MoU a force multiplier for operational preparedness.

Rajnath Singh on Operation Sindoor lessons

Singh said logistics itself is combat power. He said the strategic analysis of Operation Sindoor showed warning times could be extremely short in future conflicts. Joshi said providing quality food to the nation’s protectors is his department’s duty.

Why It Matters: Using civilian food stores for the military cuts delivery times to remote posts and makes supply chains harder to break in a crisis.
