INS Mangrol commissioned: Navy gets third indigenous anti-submarine shallow water craft

INS Mangrol (P82) was commissioned into the Indian Navy at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, on 12 October 2026, the defence ministry said. It is the third Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, built by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi.

What the Mahe-class ASW shallow water craft can do

The ship is designed for coastal and shallow waters, where larger warships struggle. It can carry out anti-submarine warfare, underwater surveillance, low-intensity maritime operations and mine warfare tasks. The Times of India reported that it carries the Abhay hull-mounted sonar, lightweight torpedoes, an indigenous anti-submarine rocket launcher and the Maareech torpedo decoy system. Three diesel-driven waterjets give it quick handling.

Key Facts

  • Pennant number: P82
  • Class: Mahe-class ASW Shallow Water Craft, third of the series
  • Builder: Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kochi

Cochin Shipyard build with 80% local content

The ship has over 80 per cent indigenous content, with work from Indian defence firms and MSMEs. Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, presided over the ceremony. PTI quoted him as saying the commissioning matters against rising geopolitical tensions at sea.

Where the name INS Mangrol comes from

The ship is named after Mangrol, a fishing harbour in Gujarat’s Junagadh district. It carries on the name of the earlier INS Mangrol (M85), a minesweeper that served until April 2004. INS Mangrol follows INS Arnala and INS Androth, commissioned in 2025, the Times of India said.

Why It Matters: Shallow-water submarine hunters guard ports and coastal approaches, a gap larger warships cannot easily fill.
