Defence ministry signs ₹661.5 crore BrahMos contract for Navy launchers

The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, signed a ₹661.50 crore BrahMos contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) in New Delhi to buy fire control systems and launchers for Indian Navy ships. The deal was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, according to a Press Information Bureau release.

What the BrahMos contract covers

The order covers the BrahMos Fire Control System and launchers that will be fitted on board the Navy’s frontline warships. It has been placed under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, the procurement route for equipment that is indigenously designed, developed and manufactured.

The BrahMos system is the Navy’s primary surface-to-surface missile system for maritime strike operations. The ministry said the weapon can hit land and sea targets from extended ranges with pinpoint accuracy at supersonic speed. BrahMos Aerospace is a joint venture between India and Russia.

68% indigenous content

The contract carries a minimum indigenous content of 68%, and the ministry said the project would encourage active participation by Indian industry, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). It is also expected to generate employment over a period of three years.

The ministry described the order as a critical milestone in efforts to indigenise advanced military technology, saying it would bolster India’s maritime security architecture and defence capabilities. The Economic Times noted that the contract is part of the government’s wider push to increase domestic procurement and reduce dependence on imported defence equipment.

Why it matters for the Navy

Launchers and fire control systems are the parts of the weapon chain that let a warship aim and fire its missiles, so the order is aimed at keeping the Navy’s main anti-ship strike capability ready on its surface fleet. The ministry did not name the ships that will receive the systems or give a delivery schedule.

The Buy (Indian-IDDM) route sits at the top of the government’s procurement preferences, as it is reserved for equipment designed, developed and manufactured in India by Indian vendors.
