Asian Games Day 13: India smash six golds, surge into top five on tally

India produced its biggest day of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Friday, stacking six gold medals across hockey, boxing, archery and wrestling and climbing into the top five of the medal table with about 76 medals — roughly 16 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze by evening tallies. Ten medals in all on Day 13, including two silvers and two bronzes, flipped a fortnight of near-misses into a surge.

History in four corners of Aichi

The women’s recurve archery team of Ankita Bhakas, Kirti Sharma and 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod beat South Korea 5–3 for India’s first Asian Games gold in the event, ending a Korean reign dating to 1994. Boxing delivered a golden treble through Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal. Sujeet Kalkal stormed back from 9–2 down to win freestyle 65kg wrestling gold. And the women’s hockey team beat China 1–0 for a first Asiad title since 1982 plus an LA 2028 quota — see our hockey final report.

Silvers in men’s and mixed recurve teams and bronzes in sailing (Nethra Kumanan) and men’s sepaktakraw quadrant rounded the day. Olympics.com’s live blog called it a session of firsts and comebacks.

Saturday still loaded

Men’s cricket faces Pakistan for gold; men’s hockey meets Malaysia; golfers carry leads into final rounds. A narrative of the six golds is in The Indian Express.

By nightfall, Indian athletes had podium finishes from Okazaki’s archery field to Noseki’s wrestling mats and Gifu’s hockey turf — a geographic spread that made the surge feel nationwide rather than sport-specific.

Correspondents following the sports desk will continue to update figures and official statements as they firm through the holiday weekend.

Table talk

Top-five status matters for funding optics at home — but Saturday’s finals will decide whether the surge becomes a signature Games.
