Jantar Mantar protest: about 1,100 detained as Opposition targets CEC over SIR

Delhi’s Jantar Mantar turned into the centre of a large Opposition and civil-society mobilisation on Friday as police detained about 1,100 protesters demonstrating against alleged electoral-roll irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). AAP leaders Atishi, Sanjay Singh and Saurabh Bharadwaj were among those held, alongside CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat and workers from Congress, RJD and student groups that rallied under a “Save Democracy” banner.

Restrictions, detentions, resignation demand

Delhi Police imposed Section 163 BNSS restrictions in the New Delhi district, citing public safety, order and traffic. Demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, arguing that voter deletions and SIR processes had undermined trust in the rolls. After detention, Atishi accused the police and the BJP of targeting anyone who stands against the Prime Minister; Sanjay Singh said he was blocked from approaching Parliament. CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby went further, calling for Kumar’s arrest over alleged “cutting” of votes.

The march extends a weeks-long campaign that also featured Form 6 and SIR disputes in finalised states — see our ECI Form 6 report. Live blogs tracked slogans, injuries claims and release timelines through the afternoon.

What happens next

Released leaders are expected to intensify parliamentary and street pressure when the political calendar resumes. Blow-by-blow updates are on India Today.

Civil-society groups circulated voter-deletion testimonials at the protest perimeter, while the Election Commission has maintained that SIR exercises follow statutory rolls-revision mandates and due process.

Correspondents following the time desk will continue to update figures and official statements as they firm through the holiday weekend.

Why it matters

A four-figure detention tally on Gandhi Jayanti underscores how bitterly contested electoral-process reforms have become aiead of the next national cycle.
