Apple Pay in India: Axis credit cards only for now; no UPI, RuPay or debit

Apple Pay is live in India, but on 2 October the fine print still mattered more than the launch headlines: only Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards can be added, with no UPI, RuPay or debit-card support at debut. In a market where UPI accounts for the overwhelming share of digital transactions, that design makes Apple Pay a premium niche rather than a mass replacement for PhonePe, Google Pay or Paytm.

Who can actually tap today

Axis is a sizeable issuer — about 16.3 million credit cards outstanding in recent RBI data — yet HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and SBI Card remain outside the Wallet for now amid commercial talks. Debit cards, the most widely held plastic in India, are excluded entirely, and even Axis RuPay credit inventory is out of scope. Apple Pay works on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch for contactless merchant taps plus in-app and web checkout where PayU and other acquirers have enabled it; Mac support is listed as coming soon.

Our launch-day report covered the Axis partnership; Friday’s explainers focused on the gaps. Analysts say four unlocks will decide scale: deals with other large issuers, debit support, any RuPay path, and whether Apple eventually pursues a UPI licence.

Card-first bet in a UPI-first country

Until those pieces move, most Indians will keep UPI apps for peer and merchant payments and treat Apple Pay as an ecosystem convenience for a thin credit-card slice. A clear limitations brief is in ABP Live.

Merchants who already accept NFC Visa and Mastercard taps can theoretically take Apple Pay without new hardware, but staff training and acquirer enablement still vary widely outside premium urban stores.

Bottom line

The product works where Axis credit meets NFC terminals — and nowhere near the breadth of India’s everyday payment rails yet.
