India women beat China 1–0 for Asian Games hockey gold, book LA 2028 spot

India’s women rewrote Asian Games history in Gifu on Friday, beating defending champions China 1–0 to claim their first hockey gold since 1982 and secure a direct Los Angeles 2028 Olympic quota. Lalremsiami Hmarzote’s 10th-minute reverse-hit proved decisive, while captain-goalkeeper Savita Punia’s second-quarter penalty-stroke save preserved the lead through a tense final hour.

Forty-four years, one goal, one save

India had not stood atop the Asian Games women’s podium since New Delhi 1982. Against a China side that arrived as favourites, the early strike forced the holders to chase. China earned a penalty stroke in the 23rd minute, but Savita read the attempt and kept the sheet clean. India absorbed waves of pressure in the closing quarter, clearing circles and running down the clock to end a drought that spanned Olympic cycles and coaching eras — including the near-miss trauma of missing Paris 2024.

The gold caps a campaign that also saw the men’s team reach Saturday’s final against Malaysia after a 4–3 semi-final thriller versus Pakistan — covered in our semi-final report. For the women, Olympic qualification may matter as much as the medal colour: LA 2028 planning can now lock central contracts and exposure tours with certainty.

Dressing-room payoff

Coach and staff had spoken all fortnight about healing a fractured room. Friday’s result was the on-turf answer. Match detail is in Sportstar.

Hockey India credited structured press resistance and circle outlets drilled through the fortnight; China’s late penalty-corner flurry found a wall rather than a nervous debutante side.

What Saturday brings

Attention swings to the men chasing back-to-back Asian Games gold — a first if they beat Malaysia — while the women savour a landmark that will travel home on every highlight reel.
