Sensex closes at 71,909, Nifty at 22,421 as equities book eighth weekly loss

Indian equities opened the October quarter on a weak note as the Sensex today settled 570.59 points, or 0.79%, lower at 71,909.70 and the Nifty 50 fell 198.50 points, or 0.88%, to 22,421.95. The shortened week closed with an eighth straight weekly decline — the longest such streak in about 25 years — after autos led sectoral losses and foreign institutional investors kept selling.

Autos drag, IT cushions a late recovery

Benchmarks hit steep intraday lows — the Sensex near 71,293 and the Nifty near 22,217 — before selective buying in information-technology stocks trimmed the damage into the close. Nifty Auto dropped about 3.5%, while FMCG and metal indices each lost more than 2%. Bank Nifty fell a milder 0.33%. The rupee weakened to a two-month low against the dollar, Brent crude stayed elevated near triple-digit levels, and US Treasury yields around 5.3% kept global risk appetite subdued. The slide builds directly on the third-day fall on 30 September, when the Sensex had already closed at 72,480.

For the week, the Sensex shed roughly 2.6–2.7% and the Nifty more than 3%, their steepest weekly declines in several months. India VIX jumped as volatility returned to the front month. Markets will remain closed on Friday, 2 October, for Gandhi Jayanti, giving traders a long weekend to digest the breakdown below key moving averages.

What the eight-week slide means for October

Brokers said the Nifty has slipped below major long-term supports near the 200-week averages around 22,600–22,400, reinforcing a bearish setup until crude, yields and FII flows stabilise. Breadth was poor, with mid- and small-cap indices also deep in the red. Session details are in Moneycontrol.

Strategists flag 22,180–22,400 as near-term Nifty support and are waiting for the RBI’s October policy review; see also our note on rate-hike odds if oil stays high.
