Hurricane Trudy: Mexico lifts all coastal warnings as storm turns away, rapid weakening expected

Update: TrendDesh reported on 18 October that Hurricane Trudy had strengthened to Category 2 with warnings from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes. This update covers the lifting of all warnings and the forecast for rapid weakening.

Hurricane Trudy was pulling away from mainland Mexico on 18 October 2026, and the Government of Mexico discontinued all warnings for the coast and the Islas Marias, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in its 2 pm MST advisory. Trudy was moving away from the coast and still had maximum sustained winds near 100 mph (155 km/h), but rapid weakening was expected to begin that night.

What the latest Hurricane Trudy advisory says

At 2100 UTC on 18 October, the centre of Trudy was near latitude 19.5 North and longitude 107.0 West, about 290 km west-north-west of Manzanillo and 170 km south-west of Cabo Corrientes, the NHC said. It was moving north-west at about 9 km/h, with a turn toward the west-north-west expected that night. On the forecast track, the centre moves away from the mainland and passes south of Baja California Sur on Monday and Tuesday. The minimum central pressure was 974 mb. Hurricane-force winds extended up to 45 km from the centre and tropical-storm-force winds up to 150 km.

Key Facts

  • Basin: eastern North Pacific off Mexico
  • Status on 18 Oct: rapid weakening (NHC)
  • Possible post-tropical: Tuesday night (NHC forecast language)
  • Intensity trend: falling through 19-21 Oct
  • Prior TrendDesh report: Category 2 warning story on 18 Oct

National Hurricane Center: Rain and wind risks that remain

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect, but people in south-western and west-central Mexico and in Baja California Sur should keep monitoring Trudy, the NHC said. Gusts to tropical-storm force were possible over parts of the west-central coast and the Islas Marias through the evening. Trudy was expected to bring another 25 to 100 mm (1 to 4 inches) of rain along and near the coast of Jalisco through the night. The NHC said Trudy could become a post-tropical low by Tuesday night and that swells would keep causing life-threatening surf and rip currents on parts of the south-western and west-central coast for the next two to three days. Rainfall could also trigger localised flash floods and mudslides on steep terrain.

How Trudy moved from threat to retreat

On 18 October TrendDesh reported that Trudy had become a Category 2 hurricane and that warnings were in force from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes. By the afternoon of 18 October, Mexico had dropped those warnings, and storm surge flooding was expected to subside that night, the NHC said. The NOAA-20 satellite image above, taken on 18 October, shows the storm’s large cloud shield off the coast of Jalisco. The NHC’s next full advisory was due at 8 pm MST, which is 8:30 am IST on Monday. Mariners off Baja California Sur should still check NHC advisories as the system weakens over the coming days. Advisory 22 was written by NHC forecaster Beven, and the centre’s key messages for Trudy are posted on hurricanes.gov.

Why It Matters: A weakening hurricane can still bring dangerous seas; updated NHC intensity calls matter for ships and Mexican Pacific communities.
