The CFB Wainwright fire killed four members of the Canadian Armed Forces and injured 39 during live-fire training at the Alberta base at about 4 pm local time on 17 October 2026, National Defence said. Prime Minister Mark Carney called it “one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime”, the BBC reported. The cause is under investigation.

What happened in the CFB Wainwright fire
Soldiers of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group from the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, were on live-fire training as part of Exercise Apollo Shooter, National Defence said. A fire ignited, and high winds made it grow and spread very rapidly until it overtook the unit’s administrative area. Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland, commander of 1st Canadian Division, said it was high-intensity combat training with live munitions, Global News reported. A grass fire started about 1 km away and “uncommonly strong winds” pushed it toward the range administrative area, he said, according to the BBC. Cannon fire had been heard from the base before it suddenly stopped, Wainwright Mayor Bruce Pugh told the BBC. The Armed Forces said there were no signs of terrorist activity.

Alberta hospitals treat 39 injured soldiers
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said 39 patients were in hospital and at least 19 were critical, according to the BBC and Global News. Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital declared a “Code Orange” for mass casualties, and patients were moved from the Wainwright Health Centre to the University of Alberta Hospital, the Royal Alexandra, Calgary’s Foothills Medical Centre and the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. The provincial health agency sent 30 units, including 22 ground ambulances, six planes and two helicopters, the BBC reported. Wainwright, about 200 km east of Edmonton, is one of Canada’s main live-fire training bases. STARS air ambulance crews from Edmonton, Saskatoon and Calgary were also deployed, the BBC said. The fire was being held by late Saturday night, the local municipal district said.
