Eagle Nebula pillars go sonified: NASA APOD turns Hubble and Chandra data into sound

The Eagle Nebula‘s famous Pillars of Creation can be heard as well as seen in NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for 18 October 2026, which features a sonified view of the nebula. “Have you ever experienced the Eagle Nebula with your ears?” the APOD explanation asks. The image combines Hubble visible-light data with Chandra X-ray data. In the video, a line sweeps left to right and turns stars and dust into sound.

What the Eagle Nebula sonified image shows

The nebula, also known as M16, is best known for bright young stars forming deep inside dark, towering structures, the APOD explanation says. These columns of cold gas and dust are light-years long and lie about 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Serpens. In the sonification, the vertical position of each feature sets its pitch, so stars and dust “sound off” as the line moves across. The image credit is NASA, ESA and the Hubble Heritage Project (STScI/AURA), and the sonification credit is NASA, CXC, SAO, K. Arcand, M. Russo and A. Santaguida.

Key Facts

  • APOD date: 18 Oct 2026

  • Data sources cited by NASA: Hubble / Chandra heritage

Pillars of Creation: What Hubble and Chandra add

The featured view combines Hubble data in visible light with Chandra data in X-rays, APOD says. The Hubble image is credited to NASA, ESA and the Hubble Heritage Project at STScI/AURA, and the sonification to NASA, the Chandra X-ray Center (CXC), the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), K. Arcand, M. Russo and A. Santaguida. Turning telescope data into sound offers listeners, including people who cannot see the image, a new way to explore it. The Chandra team keeps a wider collection of such pieces on its “A Universe of Sound” website. APOD notes that each day it features a different image with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.

Why the Eagle Nebula pillars will not last

The pillars are being sculpted and eroded by energetic ultraviolet light and powerful winds from M16’s cluster of massive stars, and are destined for destruction, APOD says. Yet the turbulent star-forming environment inside M16 is likely similar to the one that formed our own Sun. That makes the nebula one of the most studied nurseries of new stars. APOD’s authors and editors are Robert Nemiroff, Jerry Bonnell, Cecilia Chirenti and Keighley Rockcliffe, and the service is run by the Astrophysics Science Division at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA Science Activation and Michigan Technological University. The previous day’s APOD showed comet 67P in 3D. Readers can browse past entries on NASA Science through the APOD archive, calendar, index and a random APOD generator.

Why It Matters: A sonified APOD brings one of astronomy's most famous star nurseries to ears as well as eyes.
