Indian Oil boxing deal: Rs 40 crore over two years for talent, coaching and sports science

Indian Oil boxing support worth Rs 40 crore over two years was sealed on 13 October, when the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF), the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Indian Oil Corporation signed an MoU in the presence of Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The money will go to a structured programme for talent identification and athlete development.

Indian Oil boxing MoU: what the NSDF SAI deal funds

Under the deal, Indian Oil will fund talent identification, athlete development, coaching, sports science, international exposure and stronger boxing academies. It will also pay for training coaches, referees and technical officials. The MoU combines Indian Oil’s CSR money, NSDF’s role in pooling resources and SAI’s technical expertise, the sports ministry said. Outlook India and PSU Watch also reported the Rs 40 crore figure.

Key Facts

  • Funding: Rs 40 crore over 2 years
  • Partners: NSDF, SAI, Indian Oil
  • Asian Games 2026 boxing: 3 gold, 3 bronze
  • NSDF set up: 1998

“Under the revamped Khelo India Scheme, the Government is deepening collaboration with corporate partners, and CSR-backed partnerships like this will help build a truly national sports ecosystem.”

— Mansukh Mandaviya, Sports Minister (PIB)

Mansukh Mandaviya on CSR in sports

Mandaviya said the revamped Khelo India Scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet, calls for strategic use of corporate social responsibility funds in sport. The deal follows the inclusion of sports as a dedicated theme in the Department of Public Enterprises’ Common CSR Theme Framework. He urged companies to back every sport, not just boxing, and said a sport needs support in its early stage before investment begins to follow on its own.

Asian Games 2026 medals and the road ahead

The ministry said the timing matters: Indian boxers won six medals at the Asian Games 2026, three gold and three bronze. Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao, Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh and Indian Oil’s Director (HR) Rashmi Govil attended the signing. NSDF was set up in 1998 to raise money from people and companies for sport. Details of which academies and athletes will benefit first have not been released.

Why It Matters: Steady corporate money for coaching and sports science can turn India's Asian Games boxing medals into a pipeline for the 2028 Olympics.
