Bloomberg New Economy Forum: PM Modi pitches ‘Power to Empower’ at the forum’s first India edition

The Bloomberg New Economy Forum held its first India edition in New Delhi on 13 October 2026, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his address to set out a vision he called ‘Power to Empower’. He told the gathering, convened by Michael Bloomberg, that the organisers had chosen the right place at the right time.

Bloomberg New Economy Forum: Power to Empower explained

Modi said technology, data, knowledge and innovation have become the new measures of power in this decade. The real question, he said, is not who holds power but how it is used: whether technology lifts only a few or creates opportunity for millions. He framed the idea as moving from power to control to power to enable, from competing to collaborating, and from succeeding alone to helping others succeed. NDTV and The Indian Express also reported the speech.

  • Event: first India edition, New Delhi, 13 October 2026

  • Poverty claim: 250 million lifted out in a decade

“Moving beyond the power to succeed to the power to help others succeed, the vision with which I have come here today is Power to Empower.”

— Narendra Modi, Prime Minister, at the forum (PIB)

Digital public infrastructure and growth numbers

Modi pointed to cheaper mobile data since 2014, which he said let students in small towns and village shopkeepers reach knowledge and markets, and to a digital payments system used by both street vendors and car showrooms. He said India had supplied vaccines to more than 100 countries during the pandemic. He also said India had lifted 250 million people out of poverty in the past decade, and The Indian Express reported he cited growth of 7.8 per cent in April-June.

Bloomberg 30 years in India and the expansion plan

Later on Tuesday, Michael Bloomberg posted on X that he had discussed Bloomberg’s 30th year in India and its plans to expand in the country. Modi replied that it was a delight meeting him and said India welcomes Bloomberg’s plans to deepen its engagement with the economy, markets and people. The PMO also said former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak met Modi at the forum. Bloomberg has not yet given details of the expansion.

Why It Matters: Hosting a global investor forum and drawing a pledge from a major financial-data firm signals continued foreign interest in India's markets at a time of global uncertainty.
