Sariska tiger strays into Thanagazi town, Alwar-Jaipur road closed

A tiger from the Sariska Tiger Reserve wandered into Thanagazi town in Rajasthan’s Alwar district on Tuesday night, 6 October 2026, prompting authorities to close the Alwar-Jaipur road and divert traffic while police and forest teams tracked the animal, India Today and Aaj Tak reported.

Motorists stop to film the big cat

The tiger was seen crossing the road near the government postgraduate college in Thanagazi at around 9 pm. According to Aaj Tak, it moved along the college route and reached the area near the local police station. Motorists stopped their vehicles on seeing the animal, and several people began recording videos.

Once the Sariska administration was informed, the Alwar-Jaipur road was closed as a precaution and vehicles were sent through other routes. Police reached the spot and stopped residents and villagers from going towards the tiger.

Residents told to stay indoors after dark

Officials asked people to stay in safe places because the animal was moving close to populated areas. Residents were urged to avoid morning and evening walks until the situation became clearer and to step out only after daylight. Villages around Thanagazi were also put on alert.

The tiger’s presence near the town caused fear among residents through the night. Police, forest officials and the Sariska administration said they were continuing to monitor the situation.

Forest team tracking the Sariska tiger

A team from the Sariska forest department reached the area to follow the tiger’s movements. Officials are watching closely to see whether the animal turns back towards the forest. The reports did not say which tiger had strayed out of the reserve.

Sariska, in the Aravalli hills of Alwar district, is one of Rajasthan’s main tiger reserves, and Thanagazi lies close to its forest boundary. Earlier the same day, News18 Rajasthan reported that tigress ST-2302 was spotted by tourists in the Alwar buffer range near Bala Quila, and that she has been seen with cubs.

News18 noted that tigresses breeding and raising cubs in Sariska is seen as a sign that the reserve’s habitat remains suitable for the big cats. Tuesday night’s episode in Thanagazi shows the other side of that recovery: tigers moving close to towns and busy roads near the reserve.
