Iran gets official US response on Hormuz deal talks as Brent holds near $103

Iran said on Wednesday it had received an official United States response to proposals aimed at ending the Gulf conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, but negotiators still disagree on sequencing, guarantees and sanctions relief. Brent crude held near $103 a barrel as traders weighed partial shipping recovery against unfinished diplomacy.

Talks advance, sequencing stalls

Qatar has been mediating a package that includes a short ceasefire window and steps to restore Hormuz traffic. Iranian officials said trust-building measures are on the table, yet Washington and Tehran remain apart on which side moves first on sanctions, nuclear limits and naval access. Shipping data suggest flows have recovered toward roughly four-fifths of pre-war levels, though war-risk insurance and convoy rules keep costs elevated.

The exchange follows last week’s hardline warnings and Trump’s rejection of Iran’s earlier conditional reopen plan, covered in our Iran “doomsday war” report and the Hormuz risk explainer for Indian readers. Gulf shippers say even a partial reopening would cut waiting times at anchorages outside the strait.

Oil and India’s import bill

India imports more than 85% of its crude, and elevated Brent has weighed on equities, the rupee and inflation expectations through September. A durable Hormuz reopening would ease that pressure; another breakdown would push prices higher again and complicate the RBI’s October policy calculus.

What to watch next

Markets will track any written ceasefire text, IRGC statements on transit rules, and US comments on sanctions sequencing. Diplomatic updates were reported by outlets including The Boston Globe.
