Hormuz and Houthi risks explained: what Gulf disruption means for India’s oil

For Indian readers watching petrol, diesel and LPG prices, the Gulf story is no longer abstract geopolitics — it is a supply-chain risk map with three pressure points: the Strait of Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb, and disrupted Saudi bypass routes.

Hormuz is the principal maritime exit for Persian Gulf oil and LNG. Before the current conflict it carried roughly one-fifth of global oil and LNG trade. Recent tracking cited by Reuters showed traffic collapsing to single digits — only four vessels on one mid-September day, none of them a VLCC or LNG tanker, versus a 10-day average near 18. That does not mean India has run out of crude overnight; it does mean freight, insurance and competition for alternative cargoes can rise fast.

Yanbu bypass and India’s buffer

Bab el-Mandeb, linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, adds a second choke. Houthi attacks on Saudi assets have renewed security pressure on a corridor that matters for Asia–Europe shipping. India’s External Affairs Ministry has flagged threats to freedom of navigation and the safety of Indian seafarers after attacks on commercial vessels in the region.

A third shock: Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline toward Yanbu — a key Hormuz bypass — was shut after drone damage. Aramco has explored ship-to-ship transfers off Oman’s Sohar and higher loadings from Ras Tanura and Juaymah, but Gulf-side terminals still sit behind Hormuz. Reports have also pointed to delayed or cancelled Yanbu cargoes for some Asian and European buyers.

New Delhi’s buffer includes diversified procurement, product stocks and a 24-hour monitoring cell. Naval escorts under Operation Sankalp protect India-bound ships. The real risk for households is not a sudden empty pump but a longer, costlier logistics chain — especially for LPG, where a large share of imports has historically moved through Hill Gulf routes. Watching Hormuz reopen talks therefore matters as much as the next retail price notification.
