Alberta referendum day: voters decide whether to stay in Canada or start a path to separation

Alberta referendum voting takes place on Monday 19 October 2026, with polls open from 9 am to 8 pm local time, Elections Alberta said. Voters will mark 10 ballots. The last asks whether Alberta should remain a province of Canada or start the legal process for a binding referendum on separating from the country. Advance voting ran from 13 to 17 October. To vote, a person must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 on Election Day and ordinarily resident in Alberta, and must vote at their assigned voting place today.

What the Alberta referendum separation question says

Question 10 asks: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada, or should the government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?” It is not a yes-or-no question, CBC News explained. Voters choose Option 1, that Alberta should remain a province, or Option 2, that the government should begin the process for a binding vote. A win for Option 2 would not take Alberta out of Canada; it would start a further legal process under the Constitution.

Key Facts

  • Voting day: 19 Oct 2026, 9 am-8 pm (Alberta time)
  • Ballots: 10 questions
  • Question 10: stay in Canada or start process for a binding separation vote
  • Advance voting: 13-17 Oct
  • Official results: 29 Oct, 10 am

Elections Alberta: Nine other questions on immigration and the Constitution

Five of the other questions deal with immigration and services, CBC News reported. They include whether Alberta should take more control over immigration, limit provincially funded programmes to citizens, permanent residents and people with an Alberta-approved status, and require proof of citizenship to vote in provincial elections. Another would make temporary residents wait at least 12 months before getting provincially funded social support. One would let Alberta charge them a fee or premium for health care and education; Premier Danielle Smith has floated a $1,900 health care fee, according to CBC. Four questions propose constitutional changes, such as letting provinces choose some judges, abolishing the federal Senate, opting out of federal programmes while keeping the funding, and giving provincial laws priority over federal laws when they conflict.

When results come and why the vote matters for Canada

The unofficial count of Election Day ballots starts after polls close, and advance and special ballots are counted from 5 pm on 19 October, Elections Alberta said. Unofficial results will be posted by question and by electoral division as counts finish, and counting must end within 48 hours. Official results will be announced on 29 October at 10 am. Each of the first nine questions is a yes-or-no choice. Because India’s time zone is 11.5 hours ahead of Alberta, first unofficial results are expected on Tuesday morning, 20 October, Indian time.

Why It Matters: A strong vote for Option 2 would start a constitutional process that could reshape Canada's federation and its relations with trading partners, including India.
