IAF Leh crews flew a short-notice casualty evacuation late on Saturday night, when an Indian Air Force C-130J airlifted a critically ill 30-year-old civilian from Leh to Palam in Delhi, the Ministry of Defence said on 18 October 2026. The patient was then moved to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for further treatment. The ministry said the mission was flown in darkness and challenging weather.

How the IAF Leh night evacuation was flown
According to the ministry, the flight needed a high degree of operational preparedness, professional coordination and timely execution. PTI, quoting an IAF spokesperson in Leh, said the mission was carried out late on Saturday night despite the darkness and the weather. The Tribune reported that the crew flew in pitch-dark conditions using night-vision goggles, and that the C-130J regularly flies both operational and humanitarian missions at night, when visibility is a critical factor. The IAF did not name the patient or describe the medical condition, and neither did the news reports.

C-130J: From Palam to AIIMS for civilian care
The C-130J Super Hercules is a four-engine military transport aircraft that the IAF uses for airlift into high-altitude airfields such as Leh. The IAF inducted its first C-130J at Hindon Air Force Station in February 2011, and in August 2013 a C-130J-30 landed at Daulat Beg Oldi in Ladakh, at 16,614 feet, which the IAF called the highest airstrip in the world. In this case the aircraft landed at Palam, the Air Force station in Delhi, where the patient was handed over for transfer to AIIMS. The Western Air Command said the mission reflects the IAF’s operational readiness and its ability to respond quickly to critical humanitarian needs, including medical evacuation in difficult conditions. The Times of India and PTI carried the same account, based on the IAF statement released on Sunday.
Why high-altitude medical flights matter in Ladakh
Ladakh’s harsh climate creates medical risks for soldiers and civilians alike. The Tribune noted that civilians can be stranded by landslides and avalanches or need evacuation in emergencies linked to low oxygen levels and bad weather. Casualties from remote areas are often moved by helicopter first, and serious cases are flown by fixed-wing aircraft to cities with advanced hospitals, such as Chandigarh, Srinagar or Jammu. Leh’s Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is a joint civil and military airfield, which lets IAF transport aircraft fly patients out directly. The paper also reported that in September a C-130 flew a critically ill 70-year-old Ladakhi patient from Leh to Chandigarh at night, after a request from the Ladakh administration.
