Nana Patekar dies at 75 after cardiac arrest in Goa; PM Modi, Akshay Kumar lead tributes

Veteran actor Nana Patekar died on Thursday morning, 8 October 2026, after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Dona Paula, Goa. He was 75. Hospital sources told NDTV that doctors tried to revive him for almost 45 minutes, and he was declared dead at 5:20 am.

State funeral in Pune

His mortal remains were kept for ‘darshan’ in Goa for 20 minutes before being flown to Pune on Thursday evening, PTI reported. Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar announced a state funeral. Ganesh Thorat, CEO of Patekar’s Naam Foundation, said the last rites would be performed at his farmhouse at Donje, on the outskirts of Pune.

Nana Patekar tributes from Delhi to Mumbai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said few actors had the “intensity, individuality and unmistakable presence” of Nana Patekar, adding that his passing leaves a deep void in Hindi and Marathi cinema. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he gave Marathi and Hindi cinema “an entire era” and recalled his work for farmers through the Naam Foundation.

“He brought remarkable versatility and creativity to every role and gave us characters that will be remembered for generations.”

Akshay Kumar, his co-star in Welcome and Housefull 5, wrote that he was “one of those rare actors who never needed to do too much to make you sit up and watch.” Rajinikanth, Madhuri Dixit, Mohanlal, Riteish Deshmukh and Jr NTR were among many others who posted tributes.

Five decades on stage and screen

Known for his intensity and distinctive dialogue delivery, Patekar won the Filmfare Best Actor award in 2016 for the Marathi film Natsamrat. He also sang in films such as Yeshwant and Wajood. NDTV reported that he had last appeared in public four days earlier, at an event in Dona Paula.
