Anne Carson Nobel Prize: Canadian poet wins the 2026 literature award

The Anne Carson Nobel Prize announcement came from the Swedish Academy in Stockholm on Thursday, 8 October 2026, naming the 76-year-old Canadian poet, essayist and classics scholar as the winner of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, Al Jazeera and NobelPrize.org reported. Carson’s work is known for blurring the lines between poetry, essay and fiction and for giving ancient texts new life in translation.

Anne Carson Nobel Prize: why the Academy chose her

The Academy honoured Carson “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature”, according to the official press release on nobelprize.org.

It said her work centres on “the intersection between the philologist’s obsession with words and the poet’s desire for new meaning”, and that her translations from Classical Greek can be seen as independent works in their own right.

Key facts

  • Prize money: 12 million Swedish crowns (about $1.2 million)
  • Carson has written more than 20 books
  • Born in Toronto; also holds Icelandic citizenship
  • Literature is the fourth Nobel of 2026; Peace follows on Friday in Oslo

‘It’s crazy’: Carson’s reaction

Academy permanent secretary Ingrid Carlberg said Carson was “very taken by surprise” and told her she was in Iceland, “listening to the wind”. Speaking to Icelandic broadcaster RUV, Carson said: “Crazy. I think they’re all crazy… Well, you know, it’s crazy.”

Her best-known books include The Beauty of the Husband, a book-length narrative poem about a failing marriage, and The Trojan Women (2021), a graphic retelling of Euripides. In 2024 she revealed in the London Review of Books that she lives with Parkinson’s disease. NDTV noted her memoir Nox, an elegy for her elder brother Michael, who spent years in India.

Why it matters

The prize, seen as the most prestigious award in literature, puts poetry and classical translation in the global spotlight. Carson, who is also a professor of classics, has had several of her books adapted for the stage. Last year’s prize went to Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai.
