Sensex crash: index sinks 1,045 points to 32-month low, investors lose ₹10 lakh crore

A Sensex crash on Thursday, 8 October 2026, wiped about ₹10 lakh crore off investor wealth as the BSE benchmark tumbled 1,045.46 points, or 1.44%, to settle at 71,593.24, its lowest close in 32 months. A spike in crude oil prices, foreign fund outflows and fears of tighter monetary policy drove selling across sectors, PTI reported.

Key facts

  • Sensex: −1,045.46 (−1.44%) to 71,593.24; intraday low 71,327.75
  • Nifty 50: −371.25 (−1.64%) to 22,231.80; 52-week low of 22,179.90
  • BSE market value: down ₹10,01,898.68 crore to ₹4,60,97,032 crore
  • Brent crude: up 4.25% to $104.5 a barrel
  • Sensex in 2026 so far: down 13,627.36 points, or 16%

Oil, rates and foreign selling behind the Sensex crash

Brent crude jumped 4.25% to $104.5 a barrel after renewed Middle East tensions, reviving worries about imported inflation. A day earlier the Reserve Bank of India raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%, its first hike in nearly four years, and signalled that more could follow, The Hindu BusinessLine reported. Persistent foreign selling, a weaker rupee and a US 10-year Treasury yield near 5.3% added to the pressure.

Rate-sensitive, commodity and FMCG shares saw the heaviest selling. It was the second straight day of losses; on Wednesday the Sensex had fallen 429.11 points.

“Indian equities extended their decline as a combination of tighter domestic monetary policy expectations, persistent foreign selling and renewed oil-price pressure weighed on risk appetite.”

Nifty breaks its April low

The Nifty opened at 22,599.05 and slid through the session to 22,179.90, breaching its 2 April 2026 low of 22,182.55. Nandish Shah of HDFC Securities said the index had corrected more than 10% from its early-August swing high of 24,774 and was nearly 16% below its all-time high of 26,373.

Why it matters

The fall extends a difficult year for investors and mutual fund holders: the Sensex is down 16% in 2026 and the Nifty nearly 15%. With oil above $100 and the RBI tightening, analysts warned that tighter financial conditions and inflation pressure could persist for longer.
