Sensex crashes 1,124 points to six-month low as oil, US yields and FII selling weigh

Indian equities suffered their sharpest fall in weeks on Monday. The Sensex crash today took the 30-share index down 1,124.02 points, or 1.52%, to 72,771.72, its weakest close since 30 March 2026. The Nifty 50 lost 360.25 points (1.56%) to settle at 22,780.25, with 47 of its 50 constituents ending in the red.

What dragged the market down

Three pressures converged. Brent crude climbed towards $108 a barrel after fresh tension over the Strait of Hormuz, raising worries about India’s import bill and inflation. The US 10-year Treasury yield held above 5.2%, making emerging-market assets less attractive. And foreign portfolio investors kept selling Indian shares, extending an outflow streak that has weighed on sentiment for weeks. All 30 Sensex stocks declined. Financials led the slide, with Bajaj Finance, Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC Bank each down around 2%. Bank Nifty fell 1.99% to 54,471.65, and the India VIX, a gauge of expected volatility, jumped about 13% to near 14.

How much wealth was lost

The total market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms shrank by roughly ₹8 lakh crore in a single session, to about ₹474 lakh crore, according to market data compiled by brokerages. The Sensex touched an intraday low of 72,716.23 before a slight recovery into the close.

What analysts are watching next

Market strategists say the near-term direction depends on crude prices, the path of US yields and the Reserve Bank of India’s policy review in early October, where a rate hike is being debated; see our report on RBI rate-hike odds. Some analysts note that valuations have become more reasonable after the correction, but most advise caution until oil stabilises. A detailed session wrap is available from The Hindu BusinessLine.
