Kramatorsk bus attack: Russian glide bomb kills at least 30, Zelensky vows response

The Kramatorsk bus attack on Thursday, 8 October 2026, killed at least 30 people when a Russian glide bomb struck two civilian buses in the eastern Ukrainian city, rescue officials said, the BBC and Al Jazeera reported. Another 18 people were wounded, and three more were killed in nearby Bilenke.

What officials said after the Kramatorsk bus attack

Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin accused Russia of deliberately targeting crowded buses to kill as many civilians as possible. He ordered all public transport in Kramatorsk and neighbouring Sloviansk to stop, saying “we have no right to risk the lives of passengers and drivers”, and urged residents to move to safer parts of Ukraine.

“This strike will not go without our response.”

Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine

Zelensky said Russia was “trying to destroy all life in Donbas” and called on Ukraine’s partners to take “concrete action through new defence packages”. Moscow had not commented on the attack, the BBC said.

Key facts

  • UN: 15,280 civilians killed or injured in Ukraine in the first eight months of 2026

A wider assault on transport

Kramatorsk and Sloviansk are part of the so-called fortress belt that Russia is trying to capture in Donetsk. Al Jazeera reported that Russian strikes are increasingly hitting trains, buses, fuel stations and ports. Ukraine’s state railway says at least 521 locomotives have been hit since 2022.

On the same day, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband met Zelensky in Kyiv and announced more sanctions on Russia, the BBC reported. A strike on a block of flats in Pryluky, east of Kyiv, on Wednesday killed 22 people, including five children.

Kramatorsk City Council called the bus strike a “horrific crime” against civilians and said there were no military targets at the site. Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko said separate attacks on the capital on Thursday killed three people.

Why it matters

The attack shows how the war is now hitting everyday civilian movement. It adds pressure on Ukraine’s partners for air defence and comes as several countries, including India, push truce ideas focused on infrastructure and shipping.
