Lead poisoning and lead exposure are estimated to cause more than 3.5 million deaths around the world each year and affect hundreds of millions of children, the World Health Organization said on 15 October 2026. It asked countries to act faster to remove lead from products before it reaches people.

Lead paint and the gap in laws
WHO made the call ahead of International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, which runs from 18 to 26 October. Its latest global assessment found that fewer than half of countries have confirmed legally binding controls on paint that contains lead, even though exposure is entirely preventable. ‘Lead poisoning should not be stealing children’s potential in 2026,’ said Bruce Gordon, interim director of WHO’s Department of Environment, Climate Change, One Health and Migration. ‘Countries now need to move upstream, removing lead from products and environments before it reaches a child’s bloodstream,’ he said, according to WHO and UN News.
Key Facts
- Deaths linked to lead each year: over 3.5 million
- Countries with binding lead-paint limits: fewer than half
- Prevention Week: 18-26 Oct 2026
- Safe level of exposure: none known
- Next steps: Global Action Plan (2027 Assembly), PREVENT package (2027)
“Lead poisoning should not be stealing children's potential in 2026.”
— Bruce Gordon, interim director, WHO
Where lead exposure comes from
Lead can enter homes through paint, cookware, cosmetics, spices, informal recycling and industry. There is no known safe level of exposure, and even fairly low exposure can cause harm that cannot be undone, WHO said. In adults, lead adds to heart and kidney disease. In children it damages the brain and development, leading to learning difficulties, behaviour problems and poor health for life. Because symptoms may not show at first, many cases go unnoticed until serious damage has been done. WHO’s campaign page says the 3.5 million figure is an estimate from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation for 2023, and that most of those deaths were due to effects on the heart and blood vessels. It also says lead exposure accounted for more than 71 million years of healthy life lost worldwide in 2023, and that most lead used around the world goes into lead-acid batteries for vehicles.
WHO action plan on lead poisoning
WHO member states have asked the agency to prepare a Global Action Plan on Lead Mitigation, which will go to the World Health Assembly next year. In 2027 WHO will also launch a PREVENT technical package to help countries find their main sources of exposure, choose the most effective steps, enforce rules and track progress. Last year WHO joined partners in the Lead Poisoning Prevention Initiative to build laboratory capacity for blood lead testing, so that exposure can be caught early. That work includes India and Brazil, and six countries in sub-Saharan Africa: Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa and Tanzania.
