UP rain toll hits 56 as downpour lashes Uttarakhand, Jharkhand; Char Dham Yatra paused

A depression moving up from central India has brought days of intense rain to the north, and Uttar Pradesh rain deaths have climbed to at least 56, with 46 people injured, according to state government figures reported on Sunday. The same data put the number of animals killed at 107 and houses damaged at 1,021 after roughly 60 hours of continuous rain.

Where the rain hit hardest

Sitapur reported the most deaths (seven), followed by Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich and Balrampur with five each, and Ayodhya and Gorakhpur with four each. Hardoi saw the heaviest damage to homes, with 272 houses affected. Lucknow logged 125.8 mm of rain in the 21 hours to Saturday morning, while Farrukhabad received around 200 times its normal rainfall for the period. The India Meteorological Department said the system was expected to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area, but warned of flash-flood risk in parts of central and Terai UP.

Hills and eastern states also on alert

In Uttarakhand, authorities suspended the Char Dham Yatra until 27 September and shut schools in five districts, with red alerts issued for Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri and Haridwar on Sunday. In Jharkhand, schools closed in several districts including Ranchi and Jamshedpur; the Subarnarekha river was flowing about 2 metres above the danger mark in East Singhbhum and the Kharkai about 4.5 metres above it. Six flights were cancelled at Ranchi airport. Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh recorded the season’s first snowfall.

The weather has also turned political. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav mocked waterlogging on the Ganga Expressway, while BSP chief Mayawati urged state governments to give full help to affected families.

Why it matters

Late-September rain of this intensity threatens standing kharif crops just before harvest, strains drainage in fast-growing cities and disrupts pilgrim traffic in the hills. How quickly relief and crop-loss assessments reach farmers will be the key test in the coming days.
