Stephen Cash named director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, returns to where he began in 1982

Stephen Cash has been named director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, effective Monday, 19 October 2026, NASA announced on 16 October. Administrator Jared Isaacman picked the veteran engineer and aerospace executive to lead the centre where Cash started his NASA career more than four decades ago.

Why NASA picked Stephen Cash

Isaacman called Marshall the agency’s centre of excellence for propulsion and described Cash as a Marshall legend who has spent his career around the hardware and the people. He said Cash had made decisions before when human spaceflight was on the line, and that Marshall needs that experience as it works on Artemis, advanced propulsion and nuclear power. Amit Kshatriya, NASA associate administrator and chief engineer, said Cash understands that Marshall’s workforce is its jewel, and that engineering excellence comes from giving talented people the chance to design, build, test and learn through hands-on work. Cash said it was a profound honour to be back home at Marshall. RocketCityNow and Patch also reported the appointment and the 19 October start date.

“It is a profound honor to be back home at the Marshall Space Flight Center.”

— Stephen Cash, as quoted by NASA

A 34-year career at Marshall Space Flight Center

Cash began at Marshall in 1982 and spent 34 years with NASA in senior engineering and management roles. He managed Marshall’s Space Shuttle Propulsion Office through the shuttle’s final missions, and from 2011 until he retired in 2016 he led the centre’s Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate. After NASA he worked in industry, including as vice president for advanced space systems at Axient. In 2024 he was inducted into the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame. He succeeds Rae Ann Meyer, who has been acting director since September 2025 and will return to her role as deputy centre director. Isaacman thanked Meyer for her leadership during the transition and for her continued service.

Marshall's role in Artemis and the SLS rocket

As director, Cash will oversee more than 5,000 civil service and contractor employees and a wide portfolio of propulsion, space systems, science and technology work. Marshall plays a major role in NASA’s Artemis programme, including development of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and management of the Human Landing System work that will put astronauts on the Moon. It is also central to NASA’s work on nuclear power and propulsion, an area expected to grow as the agency plans crewed missions to Mars. Founded in 1960, the centre developed the Saturn rockets that carried Apollo astronauts to the Moon. Kshatriya said Marshall is also strengthening its manufacturing, structural loads and dynamics, and propulsion skills that underpin NASA’s exploration plans.

Why It Matters: Marshall builds the rockets and propulsion for NASA's Moon and Mars plans, so its new leader will shape how fast Artemis moves ahead.
