Asian Games Day 9: India wins seven medals as squash and athletics lift tally to 37

India had one of its busiest days at the Aichi-Nagoya Games on Sunday, adding seven medals and pushing the Asian Games 2026 India medal tally to 37: four gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze.

Squash silvers for Abhay and Anahat

Both Indian singles finalists settled for silver. Abhay Singh finished runner-up in the men’s event, while Anahat Singh lost the women’s final 3-0 to Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam, who retained her title. The result still underlines how quickly a young generation of Indian squash players has reached continental finals.

Athletics keeps delivering

The evening session at the athletics stadium produced five more medals:

  • Sarvesh Kushare – silver, men’s high jump
  • Ancy Sojan Edappilly – silver, women’s long jump
  • Tejaswin Shankar – bronze, men’s decathlon
  • Parul Chaudhary – bronze, women’s 3000m steeplechase
  • Harita Bhadra – bronze, women’s 200m

More medals assured in the ring

Three Indian boxers also confirmed at least bronze by reaching the semifinals, meaning the tally will grow further in the coming days. Athletics has become one of India’s biggest medal sources at these Games, building on Saturday’s haul that included Sawan Barwal’s marathon silver and the kabaddi gold double.

Earlier in the day, India had 30 medals and sat 10th in the standings, with China far ahead of the field. Sunday’s haul was spread across two sports and seven different events.

Why it matters: India’s gold count remains modest compared with regional leaders, so converting silvers into golds is the clear gap. But a spread of medals across jumps, combined events, sprints and squash points to growing depth that matters ahead of the 2028 Olympic cycle.
