Iran holds to Hormuz conditions after Trump’s rejection; IRGC claims capture of US underwater drone

The standoff over the Strait of Hormuz hardened on Sunday. Iran said it would stick to its conditions for reopening the waterway even after US President Donald Trump publicly rejected Tehran’s seven-day roadmap, and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed to have captured an American underwater drone.

What changed since the proposal

Trump told reporters at the White House on Saturday that he had rejected the offer, saying Iran wanted a deal because it was “losing so badly”. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded that Tehran had heard the president’s reaction but that “nothing has yet been conveyed to us by the mediators”. Iran says it will wait for a formal answer through intermediaries, reported to include Pakistan, Qatar and Oman, before deciding its next step. Its conditions include an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, release of frozen assets, lifting of oil sanctions and a halt to hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon.

Drone claim and signs of escalation

According to Iranian media, the IRGC navy said it had seized a US Remus 600 unmanned underwater vehicle in the strait and handed it to specialists for data recovery. There was no immediate US confirmation. Iranian media also reported explosions in the waterway hours after Trump’s remarks, and The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has told aides renewed US bombing after the midterm elections is likely.

Why it matters for India

Before the war, roughly a fifth of global oil demand moved through Hormuz, along with large volumes of LNG and fertiliser. Brent settled at $104.32 a barrel on Friday. Any fresh escalation feeds directly into India’s import bill, fuel prices and inflation.
