Russia–Ukraine aerial war intensifies as drones and missiles hit cities

Russia and Ukraine intensified their long-range aerial war on Saturday, with overnight drone salvos, strikes on cities and infrastructure, and fresh civilian deaths on both sides of the front — nearly four and a half years after Moscow’s full-scale invasion.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 173 drones overnight, including more than 50 jet-powered models; 134 were neutralized, but impacts were recorded at 19 locations. Separately, Associated Press reporting said Russian attacks killed four people across Ukraine on Saturday, including two women trapped under rubble in Zaporizhzhia and two killed in Sumy. Overnight drone strikes also injured people in the Kyiv region and damaged residential and office buildings in the capital.

Counter-drones and energy-telecom targets

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote that Russia was escalating “every single day,” listing strikes on homes in Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and the Odesa, Sumy and Kharkiv regions. He urged partners not to forget the brutality of the campaign and to choose stronger responses so the war does not spread further. At the United Nations earlier in the week he again pressed for measures to starve Moscow of war revenue.

Ukraine’s own long-range drones hit back. A strike in Russia’s Krasnodar region killed three people and wounded two, local governor Veniamin Kondratyev said, with fires reported at industrial sites; Russian media later linked the attack to an oil refinery target. Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed its Kyiv strike damaged a data centre supporting mobile internet and Starlink communications — underscoring how both sides are aiming at energy, telecoms and logistics as much as trenches.

With front-line progress slow, the war’s centre of gravity remains in the sky: missiles, glide bombs and drones shaping daily life far from the contact line.
