A DGR job fair held in Nagpur on 16 October 2026 brought together more than 480 ex-servicemen and 42 national and multinational companies, which offered over 1,300 jobs across sectors. It was the first stop in a DGR calendar of veterans’ job fairs that runs until March 2027.

The Times of India reported that it was the first ex-servicemen job fair of this financial year, and Lokmat carried the same figures for veterans, companies and openings. Ex-servicemen jobs and what employers want

Senior officers and company representatives spoke directly with veterans about open positions, industry expectations and the skills needed in civilian workplaces. The ministry said ex-servicemen bring leadership, discipline, integrity, technical skill and experience of managing people under pressure. Maj Gen Malhotra urged veterans to start their second innings with confidence and to take short courses or extra qualifications where needed to improve their chances. According to the Times of India, Maj Gen Singh asked employers to look beyond salary packages and value the loyalty and sense of responsibility that former soldiers bring to an organisation. Officials said the aim was not only to fill jobs but to bridge the gap between military experience and corporate needs.

Directorate General Resettlement plans 18 fairs

The fair is part of a larger plan. A DGR notice ahead of the event said the directorate will hold 18 job fairs for ex-servicemen across India during 2026-27. Employers and veterans can register free of cost on the esmhire.com portal, which is linked from the DGR website. The Times of India reported that the fair was led by the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare under its secretary, Sukriti Likhi. The directorate also supports retiring and retired personnel through skill training, entrepreneurship schemes and partnerships with industry. It has called on companies and industry bodies to hire more veterans, saying stronger links between government, industry and the armed forces benefit veterans, their families, employers and the country.

Why It Matters: Thousands of soldiers retire young every year, and fairs like this give them a direct route into a second career with private employers.
