Left, farmers and trade unions join push to remove CEC Gyanesh Kumar as EC issues nine-point note

The campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar widened this weekend, with Left parties, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), trade unions and student groups announcing stepped-up protests over alleged wrongful deletions from electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

Who has joined and what they claim

CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said a house-to-house survey by his party in Bihar’s Aigaon and Ziradei constituencies found that a substantial share of deleted voters were still living in their villages; in Ziradei, for example, 122 of 665 voters deleted during SIR in nine surveyed booths were found at home. CITU said poor and migrant workers were the main victims, while the SKM demanded Kumar’s removal and prosecution and sought changes to the 2023 law that governs how election commissioners are appointed. Student body AISA alleged that changes to Form 6 would keep young voters out.

The EC’s nine decisions

After a Commission meeting on Saturday, the EC issued a note with nine decisions that respond to several concerns raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. They include circulating agendas and minutes for every meeting, requiring Commission approval for officers’ foreign trips, routing new IT modules through an officers’ committee, a review of ECINet by a committee including an IIT or IIIT expert, and home visits to voters flagged for discrepancies. The Indian Express noted the note is silent on key questions, including appeals filed in West Bengal.

Why it matters

Trust in voter rolls underpins every election. The EC’s steps address process gaps, but the opposition wants accountability at the top, and the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party has threatened nationwide protests from 2 October.
