Hurricane Isaias weakens over Alabama but flash flood risk persists

Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 storm on Friday night, CBS News and the National Hurricane Center reported. It has since weakened to a post-tropical cyclone over Alabama.

Where Hurricane Isaias is now

At 4 pm CDT on Saturday, Isaias had maximum sustained winds near 30 mph and was moving north-northeast at 15 mph, the NHC said. It is forecast to turn northeast and speed up on Sunday.

Rain and flood warnings

Forecasters expect 3 to 6 inches of rain across the Southern Appalachians and the Carolinas, with up to 10 inches in places, the NHC said. Flash flooding and landslides are possible. River flooding in the western Florida Panhandle was expected to crest through Sunday.

A late first hurricane

Isaias was the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season. CBS News said NOAA data show it was the latest first hurricane in 121 years, just missing a record set on 8 October 1905. Winds had eased to about 90 mph shortly after landfall, NHC advisory 14 said.

What comes next

The NHC said considerable flash flooding and landslides remain possible across the Southern Appalachians. Little change in strength is forecast over the next 48 hours.
