Chennai Metro Phase 2: PM Modi opens Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch, launches Rs 13,000 crore projects

The first stretch of Chennai Metro Phase 2 opens on Sunday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the Poonamallee-Vadapalani section, the PMO said. He will also launch development projects worth over Rs 13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu.

What the Chennai Metro Phase 2 stretch offers

The 15-km stretch was built for about Rs 4,900 crore, according to the PMO. It includes a 3.7-km double-decker section and signalling designed for driverless operation. The Indian Express listed 11 elevated stations, from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani.

Programme for the day

The PM is scheduled to ride the metro from Porur Bypass to Poonamallee Bypass at about 11:30 am, the PMO said. The Hindu reported that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will join him. He will then visit the Jalakandeswarar Temple and the Brain Centre at IIT Madras.

Other projects and timings

The package includes national highway projects worth about Rs 3,700 crore, plus port and railway works, according to the PMO. Public services on the new line start at 4 pm on Sunday. From Monday, trains run from 7 am to 9 pm, the Indian Express reported.

Why It Matters: The line links Chennai's fast-growing western suburbs to the city centre and should cut daily commute times.
