Import duty cut on edible oils ahead of festivals — explained

Ahead of the festival season, the Centre cut Basic Customs Duty on major imported edible oils effective 24 September 2026, aiming to cool retail prices after a sharp rise in international oil costs.

Crude vs refined: the duty differential

According to the Food and Consumer Affairs Ministry, BCD on crude sunflower oil fell from 10% to nil, while crude soybean and crude palm oil moved from 10% to 5%. Refined oils were also cut, but New Delhi kept a duty differential of about 19.25 percentage points between crude and refined grades — refined sunflower to 22.5%, and refined soybean and palm to 27.5% in the published rationalisation — so domestic refiners keep an incentive to process crude rather than import finished oil.

Will kirana prices fall tomorrow?

The government said import duties are a major part of landed cost, and lower BCD should transmit through the supply chain to households facing inflationary pressure on cooking oil. It has advised industry associations to pass on the full benefit to consumers. IVPA president Sudhakar Desai welcomed the timing, noting festival months raise household demand plus offtake from sweets, snacks and HORECA/catering segments; adequate availability, he said, is the immediate priority.

Will prices fall at the kirana store tomorrow? Not automatically. Pass-through depends on inventory cycles, rupee moves, freight, and how much of the international price spike is still embedded in wholasale. The differential design also means refiners, not just importers of refined oil, are meant to be the main beneficiaries of cheaper crude inflows.

For festival shoppers, the policy is a clear signal: New Delhi is using the tariff lever to blunt food inflation. Whether the diya-oil bill actually shrinks will show up in the next few weeks of market prices.
