The USGS ShakeMap places the quake 12 km west-southwest of Pitaloza Arriba at 17:56 UTC, which was 11:26 pm IST. Its depth was 12.6 km, which makes it a shallow quake. The Hindu reported an initial magnitude of 7.6 before revision.
