US sanctions on ICC target the court itself; ICC calls it assault on rule of law

Sweeping US sanctions on ICC operations were announced by the Trump administration on Friday. The BBC reported that the measures target the International Criminal Court as an institution. The court called them an assault on the rule of law.

What the US sanctions on ICC do

US entities are barred from transactions with the ICC, the BBC reported. US companies cannot provide it banking or software services. The US had already sanctioned 17 ICC judges and officials.

Grace period

Some measures take effect after a six-month (180-day) grace period, the BBC and Al Jazeera reported. Washington said this gives member states time to negotiate a solution, the BBC reported. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the step defends US sovereignty.

Timing

The Washington Post noted the sanctions came hours after former ICC judge Navi Pillay won the Nobel Peace Prize.
