Supreme Court metro order bars total shutdown of Delhi transport

In a Supreme Court metro order on Friday, the court barred a complete halt of Delhi Metro and train services. A bench led by CJI Surya Kant asked the Centre to run them in a regulated manner, The Tribune reported.

The bench included Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana. It heard a challenge to the closure of 57 metro stations and train cancellations. The court asked the government to publicise its decision in newspapers and on news websites.

The government's response

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta agreed to ask the authorities to reconsider the prohibition, The Tribune reported. The court also asked the Centre to consider a designated alternative protest site with basic amenities.

Right to protest

The Hindu reported that the court called peaceful association a fundamental right. Justice Bagchi said the right must be exercised under the laws governing permission.
