Delhi security lockdown seals central city ahead of CEC protest

A Delhi security lockdown sealed the centre of the capital on Saturday. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) had called a protest at Jantar Mantar, Reuters reported. It demands the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Delhi Police denied permission for the gathering.

How the Delhi security lockdown works

Deployment figures vary: about 35,000 personnel per Firstpost, at least 30,000 per the Indian Express and over 20,000 per Mint. Police identified more than 30 blockade points, some at the city borders. Mobile internet was suspended within a 4 km radius from 10 pm on Friday to 10 pm on Saturday.

Transport curbs

The Indian Express reported that 45 metro stations were closed and at least 245 trains cancelled. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan wrote to all states and union territories about the prohibited assembly.

Why police refused permission

Joint Commissioner Nupur Prasad said the application arrived on 7 October. Guidelines require applications at least 10 days in advance, she said. The CJP said the protest would go ahead.
