Global Tech Layoffs Cross 125,000 in 2026; Nearly 88,000 Roles Linked to AI

Global technology companies have cut more than 125,000 jobs by August 2026, already exceeding the total number of tech layoffs recorded in the entire previous year. Of these, nearly 88,000 positions are reported to be linked to artificial intelligence-driven efficiency programmes and automation of routine knowledge work.

Generative AI tools are increasingly handling tasks such as data analysis, basic coding, report writing, customer support scripts and internal documentation. Companies argue that the shift allows smaller teams to deliver the same output, while critics warn of rising insecurity among mid-skill white-collar workers.

HR leaders say the new wave of cuts is different from the post-pandemic corrections of earlier years: it is more structural and tied to long-term AI adoption roadmaps rather than temporary cost control. Governments and universities are under pressure to expand reskilling programmes focused on AI literacy, domain expertise and human-centred roles that machines cannot easily replace.

Industry forecasts suggest further consolidation in support, QA and junior software roles through the rest of 2026.
